Top 10 Activities for a London Vacation

A trip to London affords multiple opportunities to enjoy the best of one of the largest and most diverse cities in the world. The UK capital is ready to host the Olympics this summer, and has pumped a lot of money into infrastructure and transport. While travelling during the Games might mean that you have to put up with some extra congestion, there are many activities around London that don’t necessarily require you to be part of the crowds. Some of the best activities that you should consider for a top vacation include:

1 - Go to Museums

London is one of the best cities in the world for museums. As well as the world class exhibitions at the British Museum in Bloomsbury and the Natural History Museum in South Kensington, more eclectic artefacts can be found at the John Soames Museum in Holborn, as well as at the Museum of Childhood in Bethnal Green, East London.

2 - Visit Markets

Visiting London’s markets is a good way to escape the busyness of the West End, and allows you to see the rest of the capital’s boroughs. Some of the best markets include Camden’s food and clothing market in North London, eclectic offerings at Broadway Market in Hackney, East London, and food at Borough Market by London Bridge and the Tower of London.

3 - Take in Landmarks

Every trip to London should take the time to visit St Paul’s Cathedral, which overlooks the Thames, and is still one of the capital’s greatest architectural achievements. If you want to sample the heart of London’s commercial districts, then a walk through Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square in the West End will give you a good sense of the city at its busiest.

4 - Go to the Theatre

London has hundreds of theatres, most of which are clustered around the West End, where the largest productions are held at theatres like the Adelphi and the Lyceum. Further out of the West End, opportunities also exist to sample great productions at the Barbican Centre and the Hackney Empire. With fantastic London musicals such as Billy Elliott and Les Miserables still often a popular choice for theatre enthusiasts, the theatre is definitely worth a visit!

5 - Take in International Cuisine

You’re spoilt for choice in terms of international cuisine within London. As well as major chains and five star restaurants in West London, you can sample some of the UK’s best Indian food in Brick Lane in East London, and Chinese in Chinatown, part of the West End. Virtually everything you can think of in terms of food can be found around the city and its boroughs, from Thai to Turkish, Mexican and African.

6 - Ride the London Eye

Worth going on at least once, the London Eye is a large ferris wheel that offers unbeatable views over the River Thames and the city as a whole via passenger pods.

7 - Enjoy the Parks

Some of London’s best parks offer an escape from the busy streets, and include Hyde Park and Green Park in West London, as well as the sprawling fields of Hampstead Heath in North West London, Victoria Park in East London, and Kew Gardens in South West London.

8 - Visit London Zoo

One of the world’s best zoos, London Zoo is by Regent’s Park, and offers access to 755 different animal species.

9 - Shopping

The main shopping centres of the UK capital are located around Oxford Street and Regent Street in West London, as well as around the boutique areas of Bond Street in Mayfair, and the more eclectic shopping of Soho and Camden Gardens. Further East, you can find more unusual shops in Spitalfields and Shoreditch, as well as in Camden in North London.

10 - Take a Ride on the Thames

A ride on the Thames is another way to see the city, with barges and passenger boats running along the River, allowing you to see the changing city from the West to the East.
